Sulfonamide drugs inhibit the growth and reproduction of susceptible bacteria by interfering with their folate metabolism. The chemical structure of sulfonamides closely resembles that of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), enabling them to competitively bind to dihydrofolate synthase within the parasite, thereby blocking the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid. This, in turn, disrupts the production of tetrahydrofolic acid coenzyme, ultimately halting nucleic acid synthesis and preventing the proliferation of coccidia. As a result, these drugs are effective for both the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis.
